Beginning Your Development As a New Clinical Supervisor

Beginning Your Development As a New Clinical Supervisor

After reading through the course materials and thinking about what a clinical supervisor does, how do you perceive the role of a supervisor differing from that of a counselor, teacher, or consultant? Understanding these differences will assist you in distinguishing how supervisory work is unique from other counseling roles.

In this Discussion, you reflect upon your personal characteristics and evaluate how those characteristics intersect with your supervisory style. This exercise will provide you with an assessment of your strengths, which are instrumental in helping you begin your development as a counseling supervisor.

To prepare for this Discussion:

•Review the Course Introduction. Pay particular attention to the scope of clinical supervision.

•Complete the “Supervisory Styles Inventory” on pp. 344–345 of the course text, Fundamentals of Clinical Supervision.

•Review your results. Consider your areas of strength as well as those areas that you would like to develop more fully.

•Think about how, over the course of the next 12 weeks, you can begin developing your supervisory style in the context of what you study in this course, and during its related experiential activities and telesupervision experiences.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a summary of the results of the self-assessment, “Supervisory Styles Inventory.” Explain what you learned about yourself and describe at least two supervisory style areas that you plan to develop during this course.
