Haussmann, a French administrator and also a city planner performed extensive forms of activities or programs which involved the municipal improvements in Paris. This did involve putting in place a new water supply and sewage system, the development of new avenues through the small streets of Paris. Haussmann also landscape gardened the Bois de Boulogne and constructed the Paris Opera and Les Halles market (Ask.com, 2011). There are though several quarters that dispute his development, but it is of no doubt what he has one is great influence to Paris and the whole of the world as well. In the process of administering of Baron Haussmann, 71 miles of new roads were built, 400 miles of pavement and 320 miles of sewers had been added to Paris; 100, 000 trees planted and houses, bridges among the public buildings built. He in addition destroyed the old and rugged part of the city, but with the sole aim of eradicating the slums and discourages riots, the city was ultimately more accessible, and it did accommodate new railroads and made the city beautiful (encyclopedia.com, 2004). The lengthy and straight parades (boulevards) provided the circulation of traffic which would otherwise spoil the activities of the would-be rioters as the mob could not be in a position to defend the boulevards as it readily barricaded the slum alleyways.
Haussmann developed the areas of the Louvre and Halles. He availed an experienced engineer called Alphand to continue with the development of the Bois de Boulogne, others included the building of the sewers. Haussmann was however to retire in 1869 as he had so many critics who made several accusations of his heavy spending and his said disrespect to the laws of the finance.
