Call to a second chance
Just a few hours after coming from town, Kudini, a white haired female rabbit heard of an accident along the highway she had just used. She called to her mother to inform her of the news and the horror it gave her after clearly identifying the taxi that had just crashed along the highway. It was the taxi she had intended to take earlier in town. It belonged to the fox driver who grinned at her, showing its yellow dirty teeth, and she felt was of no good in her kind of mood. It was clear he would engage her in unnecessary stories as common of many fox taxi drivers who always thought they could lure their clients into silly cunning stories. She was not in the mood of describing her experiences and telling off the fox that she had just broken up with her boyfriend Gulio and was in no mood for telling stories. Looking behind that taxi, she saw an elderly rabbit leaning on a cream taxi. He looked responsible and Kudini felt that he would offer some fatherly comfort and being of his kind, he would easily understand her.
She gripped her shopping bag firmly and approached the driver who greeted her warmly. Kudini enquired for the prize to 5th avenue animal ranch and after an agreement with the rabbit taxi driver, she hoped in glad to be on her way home. She wanted to forget what had just taken place between her and Gulio. Gulio was a brown handsome rabbit admired by most female animals at campus. The feeling nagged but she bit her lips and wished the situation off, hopping that it would go away eventually. The ride was a quiet one and when she got home, she slouched onto the chair and gazed emptily at the television. Soon, there was the moment that triggered her attention and startled her memories of being alive. The moment awakened her previous desire of dying because of a failed relationship, but what was on television gave her a reason to feel so lucky.
She could not believe what the news provoked in her mind. The taxi she had just ignored lay along the road with its left side completely bashed. The young fox and his passenger were trapped inside the taxi and efforts for getting them out were still underway. That is the side she would be in and the thought sent shivers into her body. She did not want to die already, and she regretted ever contemplating defeat out of a relationship issue. The reality was that she was an inch away from death. She felt that had she taken that taxi it would be her on the breaking news as a victim of the fatal accident. Kudini felt devastated and she called out to her mother who was in the kitchen unaware of her arrival home. The woman came into the room first in astonishment at the early arrival of Kudini. However, on noticing the worry in her daughters’ voice, she opted not to ask why she had come back so early and instead enquired what the shouting was about and what made her so worried.
In the mind of Kudini, the presence of death was real and strong in her mind and she could not stand the imagination of escaping death so narrowly. It was a difference of ten minutes, from the time of her getting home and the time the accident occurred according to the reports in the television. She felt devastated and scared with emotional drain taking control of her as she explained what happened to her mother. Her mother tried her best to comfort her, told her that it was her female instincts watching over her, and protected her from any dangers. “We rabbits have special instincts and that keeps us from danger. It is always a good thing to obey your instincts and I am glad you did when you decided to take the old rabbits taxi other than the one involved in the accident. Now just focus on the fact that you are alive my dear.” This was not enough consolation for Kudini as she did not understand the ideas of impulses and instincts her mother tried to explain to her. She could not even attribute her sheer luck to the knowledge of rabbits being careful drivers than foxes known for getting into accidents every now and then. She was so engrossed in her line of misfortunes that nothing could console her.
Meanwhile, her mobile phone begun ringing and the only thing she could think of was the source some negative information. She declined receiving the call and her mother fumbled into her daughters’ handbag to receive the call. Seeing that it was Gulio, she informed Kudini about it and that made her to decline receiving the call even more. Her mother faced a mixture of confusion in the moment and the phone disconnected. Before she could place it down, the phone begun ringing again and it was still Gulio. She knew it was useless asking the devastated girl to receive it and decided to talk to Gulio. Gulio was apologetic for what had happened between him and Kudini and by the time he heard of her narrow escape from death, he realized that he was about to lose the girl he loved.
It was a moment of realization for the two of them and as much as Kudini declined speaking with him, he knew how much he needed to hear her voice. He could not come to terms of losing her for any reason, at least not to death. He got off the phone and rushed over to Kudini’s home to make up with her. His mind reeled back and forth; as he regretted the hurting words, he had told Kudini earlier in the day. He wished there was a way, of retrieving them and not being the reason for her disappointment and leaving campus earlier than usual. As much as no one knew of the impending accident and that Kudini never really got involved in it, he knew that her present devastation was because of his doing. Had he not been so careless by flirting with other female animals at campus, there would be no reason for their disagreement. Kudini would not have left school early and that narrow escape from an accident would not be an addition to her pain.
He reached Kudini’s home within fifteen minutes and found her still in tears. When she saw him, she felt confused. She wanted to hold him for comfort and at the same time, she could not come to terms with that feeling after what had transpired between them at school. He had hurt her and that is all she wanted to know. It took Gulio a lot of effort pleading with her to accept his apologies. Finally, she looked at Gulio sitting next to her and hugged him burrowing her head on his shoulders and crying her heart out. They both knew they still needed each other and could not allow the situation to separate them especially after the scary threat of death. Gulio smoothed Kudinis’ soft fur and promised never to flirt or hurt her feelings again.
