Students’ analyses should demonstrate their understanding of the concept and the various aspects of people’s lives affected by it as it is manifested in American society. The objective is to get students to apply the perspectives and knowledge developed through the class to the larger realm of life outside the classroom. The project should include an introduction to the topic and one or more specific dimensions of poverty. This may be where you explain the concept of poverty briefly, talk about why it is important to the people in your state and the U.S. This should capture the interest of the audience and compel them to seek more depth through looking at the rest of your project. Next, the description should include, at least, a historical overview of the problem and a contemporary description of it to the audience. The “effects” explanation should address some of the “costs” of poverty to society and include examples and descriptions of experience of poverty. Based on the knowledge gained from course materials and materials from the website, students will write an empirically driven and informed paper illuminating the problem of childhood poverty in their state.
