This assignment is intended to assess the following learning outcomes:
- Plan an activity programme involving modified fitness appraisal protocols for a person with specific needs
- Deliver an effective presentation
Details of the task
- Presentation (40%):
The purpose of the presentation assignment is:
- To allow students the opportunity to develop in-depth knowledge in an area relating to exercise/physical activity and persons with special needs
- To allow students to develop their presentation skills in a specialist area
Students will be asked to select a specific chronic condition covered in the semester. The student will then have to review how physical activity/exercise impacts on the condition as it relates to individuals with specific needs and in particular its impact on their Active Daily Living. Students will be expected to conduct:-
- an in-depth review of the literature relating to their chosen condition and how and what types of exercise prevent and/or reduce the impact of the condition on the clients Active Daily Living
- present their findings to the class.

Each group of students will select the specific topic for their presentation (a discussion of potential topics will take place during the first week of the course). All topics must be approved by the module leader.
The length of each presentation will be approximately 20 minutes, followed by approximately 5-10 minutes of questions. Presentations will take place on Thurs 1st and 8th May. Grading criteria for the presentation assignment is provided on Page 14 of this module guide.
- Explain and evaluate pre-participation procedures
- Indicate the acute and chronic physiological changes caused by exercise
- Identify the health and fitness benefits of exercise for an individual with a Chronic condition
- Evaluate fitness assessments
- Plan and appraise a training programme to develop fitness
