Civil Rights
For this assignment we will be looking at both primary (first hand) and secondary (after the fact) sources. In your text you are to read Martin Luther Kings I have a Dream Speech, which can be found at this link http://www.archives.gov/press/exhibits/dream-speech.pdf. Then Read The Montgomery Bus Boycott: An African American Community Challenges Segregation on page 740 of the required textbook. This will give you some more examples of movements during this time. Other examples can also be found throughout chapter 28 of the text. These will show you that the majority of the people involved in these movements were “ordinary” students and citizens, not high profile individuals or those in the government. You may use any sources you feel that are relevant make sure to site them for me though in a bibliography.
From these sources, and any notes that we may have gotten through so far, you are to write a 2-3 page paper. The paper should be set up in the following format;
Introduction- Introducing the topic of civil rights in America during the mid 20th century. What kinds of activities took place historically during this time? Making the main point or topic of your paper clear from this paragraph.
Body- Relate some of the more noteworthy happenings of the times in which ordinary citizens took part. What can you learn from the actions of these people.What were some of the things that they did to bring about their desired change? How can our experiences and stage in life change the way we see the world around us? Also, how can it make you become a more ethical and engaged world and American citizen?What responsibilities do we have as citizens of a community?
Conclusion- Sum up the paper that you just wrote;redefining your main topic.
The paper will be graded according to the rubric which is posted here on blackboard. The paper is due printed and turned in no later than Monday April 29th.
