Concept Analysis Detailed Instructions and Grading Rubric

The concept you chose to analyze is totally up to you. It will be examined according
to the steps outlined by Walker and Avant. Each of the steps are outlined in more detail below. You can also use the grading rubric to guide the focus of your writing for this paper.

Introduction: This addresses Step 1 & Step 2 (2 points):
In this section you will present the concept that you selected and you will discuss why you selected the concept. You should also include a purpose statement in this opening paragraph. “The purpose of this paper is to….”

Varied uses of the Term: This addresses Step 3 (5points):
Using various sources such as dictionary.com, Wikipedia (the 1 and only time it is allowed), Thesaurus.com, Merriam-Webster.com, Tabers dictionary etc. (at least 5 dictionary type references) to compare the definitions of your selected concept. In addition, use several scholarly (at least 5) sources to elucidate the concept in nursing and other disciplines.

Critical Attributes:This addresses Step 4 (5points):
List the critical attributes found in the literature that you reviewed. Remember that critical attributes are those things that occur repeatedly in the literature that help to “make up” or define the concept.
Construct Cases: This addresses Step 5 (6points):
Present a model, contrary and borderline case. The model case will exemplify what the concept really is. The contrary case demonstrated what the concept is not. The borderline case will present a pseudo-application of the concept. For EACH case presented, make sure that you address the critical attributes- how they are/are not present.

Related Concepts:
Present any related concepts (synonyms) found while examining your selected concept. In other words, are there other concepts “very close” to the concept you are analyzing. The thesaurus is very helpful for this.

Invented case:
Present a make believe or fairy tale case that exemplifies the concept. The invented case is just like the model case. It will exemplify all of the critical attributes but is make believe.

Illegitimate use:
Give examples of the concept used out of context or improperly.

Antecedents and Consequences:This is Step 6 (5 points)
Clearly identify antecedents and consequences of your selected concept. As discussed in lecture, antecedents are those things that precede the concept occurring and consequences are those things that occur because of or due to the concept occurring.
