Prompt: Write an essay analyzing two or more articles taking different positions on an issue that you are passionate about. The articles must be taken from the Opposing Viewpoints database on the Auraria library website. You may also draw on other sources for background information or context. Overview: The purpose of the Common Ground essay is for you to analyze opposing sides of an argument by analyzing two articles from opposite points of view (i.e. one is a “for” article and one is an “against” article.) In addition to looking at where the authors disagree, you will also note any points of agreement or common ground. These points of agreement or common ground could be things like shared values, beliefs, and/ or assumptions. (Review the Finding Common Ground chapter for details.) Additionally, because the point of this essay is to analyze arguments from opposing sides, it is important to leave your viewpoints out of the body of the essay. Instead, show readers that you can accurately summarize and analyze different points of view. Readers should not know your position on the topic until the conclusion of the essay.
Length/Format: 3-5 pages, MLA format with proper in-text citations, and a works cited page.
Primary Sources: One set of articles in the Common Ground Essay module in the Content section of D2L. You will use the articles from opposing points of view as the focus of your essay.
• Optional – 1 Secondary Source: You can also use and overview article from the Opposing Viewpoints website to help give readers a good understanding of the background and context issues needed to understand the topic. You will not be analyzing the similarities and differences of the overview article in the body of your essay. Overview articles should mainly be used in introductory and concluding paragraphs.
SUGGESTED FORMAT
Introduction
• The first paragraph should give readers and overview of the issue. (Don’t introduce the opposing articles until the next paragraph.)
• End this paragraph with a transitional statement that summarizes the disagreement (between your two opposing articles) that will be examined in the essay.
• The second paragraph should introduce the two opposing articles with a brief summary of each argument.
• End this paragraph with a thesis statement that summarizes the focal point(s) of your analysis. (See sample essays in the Finding Common Ground chapter in the St. Martins Guide)
