Running Head: COMPARE AND CONTRAST 2 POEMS
Compare and Contrast 2 Poems
Compare and Contrast 2 Poems
Using elements of imagery compare and contrast the theme (main idea) in Brooks’s “We Real Cool” and Frost’s “Nothing Gold Can Stay.”
Thesis
The world has several things that are pleasant and attracting to several people. It is the common error and misjudged considerations that people have that make them choose the wrong paths. We tend to loose site of the small and important aspects that life has while indulging in the perceived pleasantries life has to offer. In the end one tends to suffer for their choices. My comparison is based on two life instances that people choose with the same impact at the end.
Introduction
In the poem “Nothing Gold can stay” it starts from a perfect and promising start surprisingly takes a different direction. The poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” offers a theological approach that attempts to describe the transformation of the leaf from gold to green. “So Eden sank to grief” the speaker states. The use of the word, ‘grief’ attempts present the implication of the transformation is painful or is at a disadvantage (Frost). The poem then changes its consideration from a mythical point of view to a temporary one. “So dawn goes dawn to day” attempts to return the person to the real world, but at this point this statement directs us back to the night and day cycle unlike the seasons. The image of the gold flower before it becomes a leaf present the first stages of spring. We are being told that we tend to evade its beauty as it is small and takes a shorter time period. The use of the word dawn brings forth the aspect of a rise into a new day brings forth the morning sun rays through the clouds to become harsh rays, the lack of a delicate light results to the introduction of daytime. These images provide the nature of the world’s good appearance.
In the poem “We Real Cool” by Brooks is written in the first person basis, the message though still comes out. The speaker, a pool player, is allowed to speak for herself and their lack of education is brought out in the way they speak, “We real cool” lacks the use of the word ‘are.’ They find comfort in playing pool, all they do is sing, drink and play (Brooks). An attitude of nonchalant is presented in the poem. The applied use of “we” shows that they have been there initially. With the uprising mood at the beginning of the poem, the poem changes in the later stages “We die soon.” The title “THE POOL PLAYERS.SEVEN AT THE GOLDEN SHOVEL” is meant to mean good tidings as they play pool. It is imagined that they are street children as they are not attending school. They are less concerned about their life hence lives carelessly. This will make them live a poor life. The use of the slang, “we real cool” imagines a couple of young men and may be blacks. It presents the present situation for young men and women that miss school.
The two poems compare in the sense that the both speak about the lack of seriousness that the world has in very valuable things available to them. In Frost’s “Nothing Gold can stay” presents the lack of consideration taken to the perfect beginning that people have however short it is. While in Brook’s “We Real Cool” presents young men or women who don’t take their early life seriously; they party, drink and sing. Moreover, the two poems sue the words gold to mean the pleasure that is associated with the prevailing situation. The poems also state the unfortunate circumstances that follow their steps. In Frost’s “Nothing Gold can stay” states that there will be “grief”; “So Eden sank to grief”, which is imagined to mean pain or suffering. While on the other poem “We Real Cool” in the last sentence “Die Soon”, may be taken imagined to mean the suffering that results from their first steps, lack of education. The poems speak of the prevailing situations in the world as at present.
The two poems similarly have their contrasting sides. Whilst the poem by Frosts uses the nature to speak about the human trends and how they lack consideration for the little things in life, the other poem by Brook on the other hand uses human beings directly to convey its message. The implication by the two poems varies in the sense that; in the “Nothing Gold can Stay” presents a less severe result when compared to Brooks “We Real Cool.” The message in the Frost’s poem is based on a singular person basis, his or her lack of consideration for the little things in life, “Nature’s first green is gold.” Brook’s poem is based on a large number of people who lose focus in life and focus on other things that seem fun but are not. It consequently leads to death of suffering. In Frost’s poem the pleasantness is something not worth evading as it is short lived and we ought to take consideration of it. The contrast in Brook’s poem is presents feelings that seems pleasant but in real sense it is not, it leads to suffering and even death.
Conclusion
The two poems attempts to pass a message to every person of how one may lose concentration in the good things the world offers and instead focus on other things. Much of the time is spent doing things that seem important while evading the most important ones. The poems send a message that such tendencies will lead to pain and suffering.
