Critical review of literature
This is a critical review of the Capston literature project, the article is concerned about the increase in obesity in America and that it is as a result of the poor eating habits. The book has a renowned author known as Keith Newman who is well experienced as a writer, freelance journalist, published author, producer as well as a poet (Conference, 2011; Newman, March 2008; Olufemi, n.d). The article owned by the Leadership for Middle Level Science at the University of Pennsylvania. There is additionally a link that the author, Keith Newman, can be reached by; newmanke@sas.upenn.edu.
The article is accurate considering several aspects that the author has applied in speaking about diet and its impact. In the article, the author has used several proofs to add value and reliability on the statements he has made (Cooper, 1989; nmsu, 2009, April). Take for instance when he states that there is a growing popularity of diets amongst people which evident by the increase in books sold. This information is acquired from the Astrup et al page 1 in the year 2004. The article has similarly put to use some famous scholars, namely Atkins who known for his research on diet. The article has not fallen short of famous researchers (Laureate Education, 2006). The article has similarly made good use of studies performed by other sectors; study done by Bravata in the year 2003 found that there was a high number of people with weight loss who had limited amount of calorie intake (Torraco, 2005). The article however does not have an editor who is tasked with verification of the information. The article similarly has been called to question over the use of the Atkins program in addition to the use of incomplete studies to prove a point, for instance there is the study on low-carbohydrate diets which have been incomplete for a long period of time. The study similarly lacked information on certain important aspect; there was no information based on the risk for using food that was low on carbohydrates for three months.
In terms of objectivity of the article, there are several aspects being critiqued in regard to nutrition, for instance how one is able to eat meat, which contains high fat and other dairy products, and still consider that as way losing weight (Cooper, 1998; psych. 2010). The article on several occasions has been designed to sway the opinion of the readers (Uris, 2011, April 5). The researchers as well as the Atkins program have made several recommendations which have been rejected by Keith Newman; the researchers stated that the low intake of fiber and calcium is bound to have negative implication in the future time to come, this has however been rejected by Newman. Newman states that he does not agree with the use of the low-carbohydrate diet and that the negative impact may not be known in a certain time frame.
The article covers on the long term effects of the using diet to control obesity. The article has made use of several researchers as well as the Atkins program to extend discussion on the topic stated. Newman on the other hand has made his view known by trying to sway the readers to certain points of the point covered. What the article has that is not found elsewhere is the combination of several skilled researchers point of view on one platform and critically assessing their credibility for the benefit of the persons concerned. The depth of the discussion in the literature view is quite limited considering that author only hits on the main points and gives his view of what he thinks on his side (wordworx, 2009). It is therefore a shallow assessment.
Conclusively, the points in the article are well organized. The author has introduced the main discussion to the readers which has captured the reader’s attention (Beyer, 1995). He went on to give the facts of the main topic and then discusses the points brought out by the varied researchers as well as the Atkins program. He then gives his point of view after each point stated by the researchers. He then ends with words to keep in mind for the reader.
