define any of these terms: FILTER, RIPPLE, FREQUENCY, OR INSULATOR
Extended Definition
Choose a technical term in your field and write an extended definition for a targeted audience, such as a new hire, a client, or other non-technical audience. The key here is making a technical term understandable to a “non-expert.” Your definition should be designed to fulfill a particular purpose. Carefully review the information in Chapter 7 of your text for guidelines on writing your definition and refer to pages 247–250 for model extended definitions. Your definition should be double spaced and approximately three to four paragraphs.
An effective definition will meet the following criteria:
Begin with a formal sentence definition that includes the term, class, and distinguishing characteristics.
Extend that definition through description, example, analogy, or other definition techniques described in Chapter 7 your text. Remember, don’t use a complex analogy. Use simple, straight-forward analogies your reader will understand.
Avoid the definition fallacies identified in your text on pages 239 “240.
If you consult a source or sources, be sure to paraphrase the material and follow APA guidelines to cite your sources appropriately.
If you believe an illustration or graphic is necessary, be sure to label and cite it appropriately. You may find it helpful to review Chapter 3.
