- DEPENDENCE, INDEPENDENCE, INTERDEPENDENCE (Turkle)
What is Turkle trying to say? Why do Americans mistrust the American government? Compare Turkle’s position with the article in the Arthur (September 10, 2012, page 3)
Turkle tries to give the impression of people coming from acting as dependent to independent then again returning to being interdependent. This is due to the emergence of interned today which acts as a corporate trap. This is different to the internet of 1995 where people could only stay withdrawn in the supposed postmodern playhouse, as implied by Turkle. These people did not have the knowledge that the internet could boost the level of interaction. The modern internet form a chain of people glued on the small screens of the computers in the quest to staying in touch through sending and receiving messages. This is the effect of technology with regard to the web, which has made it easy for people to interact with one another. The form of interaction may seem to change, but the conversation will always remain the same hence promoting interdependency.
The way government uses technology has made the Americans mistrust the latter. Technology has come to repress the needs of the citizens for privacy in some of the public activities. The American government has involved itself in the purchase of surveillance technology. Even though, the government may consider the surveillance security as the proper way to track the bad person, it is a fact that it (surveillance) only distinguishes between users and targets; and not bad person from the good person. Rather, the surveillance technology is a form of torture and execution on the citizens. For instance, the surveillance technology allows the government agents to hack individual’s account subsequently accessing the secret information owned by the latter. This makes the users of the web to develop a form of timidity during their interactions because of the belief that there is a third party accessing the ongoing conversations. The advanced technology by the government has denied the citizen their rights to interacting with each other in the quest to criticizing the government. The surveillance bars the citizen from talking against the government.
Turkle asserts that the internet has emerged to be a powerful instrument that strengthens the relationship between people from different people. This is a different situation to Arthur (September 10, 2012, page 3) which asserts that technology has deteriorated the relationship between people. The difference between Turkle reasoning to that of the article lie on how each depict the meaning of interaction in the society. While Turkle feels that messaging through the screen of computers enhance interaction of people, the article asserts that messaging through the internet always lacks some of the crucial components of interaction. The article notes that the use of the internet has made many people become withdrawn because of the missing the confidence of face-to-face interactions (Turkle, 2011). The views expressed by the article has made many people think that technology is just an instrument into making people more dependent than ever; consequently, conflicting the idea of interdependency by Turkle.
- WHAT DOES EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE DESIGN LOOK LIKE (Isaacson)
Steve Job’s approach to comprehensive design encompasses digging through the depth of the complexity. Jobs believed that true simplicity is realizable through understanding everything about a product including method of manufacture (Isaacson, 2011). According to Jobs, design was more than the external appearances of a product. The design had to reflect the essence of the product. The process of designing a product at Apple would then depend on the engineering and manufacture technique. To accomplish the ambition of attaining the most suitable design, he called upon designers, product developers, engineers, and the manufacturing team to collaborate toward the initiative. Jobs believed that industrial design and engineering should be part of similar process. By unveiling the iPod on October 23, 2001, Jobs wanted to show that the gadget was the essence of everything. Inherently, Apple demonstrated a connection of poetry to engineering, arts as well as creativity intersecting with technology, and a design that is relatively bold and simple. Steve Jobs’ passion for continuous invention through research and development facilitated establishment of more advanced products.
The cleverly designed volume would help in the provision of a concise but a well-balanced view of his products. The driving force has always been an ambition to stay at the top of the game and deliver products that create an impact not only in the industry but also in the lives of consumers. The Apple world has played a key role in the inventions and innovations that has characterized the market courtesy of technological advancement. The most interesting bit of the innovation is the launch of the iPod in 2001, which was a milestone to the growth, and development in the industry. Steve Jobs’ interest in design began with his love for the childhood home. The comprehensive design became the hallmark of Apple products under the custody of jobs. Steve Jobs partnership with Hartmut Esslinger (1980) and Jony Ive (1997) facilitated creation of design and engineering aesthetic that set Apple apart from other technology companies (Isaacson, 2011).
It also helped market some of its most valuable products globally with the demand for most of the products increasing by the day. The guiding principle remained simplicity. The deep simplicity as advocated by Steve Jobs originates from engineer’s ability to know the essence of every product the company manufactures. The function of every component and the complexities surrounding its engineering are some fundamental aspects of simplicity. According to Jobs, simplicity takes a lot of hard work and patience. The outcome would be something very simple, easier to understand, and giving rise to elegant solutions. He believed that a good design should be sleek and simple. The user should not find the design daunting or unfriendly to navigate. To Jobs, the primary element of a comprehensive design would be making thing intuitively obvious particularly in an office setting.
- WOULD YOU RATHER BE AT HAVARD? KIRKPATRICK
What do you think of the facebook story? If you saw the film, how would you compare the film of Kirkpatrick or the Mezrich book? Is there a person, or are there persons, in the story that you would identify with? What are the various roles in the book that speak to your own personal experience?
The Facebook story illustrates about the foundation of film and the way it came to the mind of Zuckerberg. The foundation of facebook came as a result of Zuckerberg wanting to win over her girlfriend enough evidence that facebook could serve as a form of interaction between people. The facebook story is relevant to today’s facebook because of the intentions of Zuckerberg while wanting to introduce the social media. He states that he wanted to redefine the internet through introducing a form of sharing and transparency. Opinion offered by Mezrich Book is similar to that of Kirkpatrick film especially in the way they view rising differences between the two co-founders of Facebook. Both the literature asserts that the differential ideas between Eduardo and Zuckerberg were the main reason for the separation of the two (Mezrich, 2010). The success of the facebook is ironical since it led to the separation between the two long friends.
The people I can easily identify with are the conservative groups. These groups at many schools felt free for the first time upon forming their own groups in clear opposition to SDS. The groups accomplished this freedom without general disapprobation at a number of schools. The two moderate students engaged in a brawl denounced SDS in a way that could be unthinkable a couple of years ago. However, presence of police officers brought sanity back with the divided students being united once again after serious division during revolution.
The role of student’s leaders in leading protest is common in several institutions of higher learning as well as trade unions of representing workers in business organizations. Approximately 10,000 students staged mass rally that lasted for about four hours. The advantage or disadvantage of privacy remains a misery. February 4, 2004 was a great moment for Mark Zuckerberg as he launched Face book from his Harvard dormitory room. This marked a new era under social networking. Although it started as Harvard thing, it later gained much popularity in many states worldwide.
