Nursing is one of the most growing professions in the job market and it has a great effect on the delivery of health care (Morgan & Somera, 2014). However, nursing shortage remains an ongoing/prevalent global issue jeopardizing patient safety. Nurses have an important role in preventing medications errors, decreasing rates of infections and reducing falls and pressure ulcer incidents (Morgan & Somera, 2014).

According to the Health Workforce Australia (2012) Br 2025 Australia will experience a 27• decrease in the number of nurses (Beanland, 2013). Furthermore, the Centre for Workforce Intelligence (CWI) in UK expects that nurses’ numbers will decrease by 11% in 2016 (Attree et al, 2011). Nursing shortage is secondary to lack of qualified nurses, poor nursing retention rates and job dissatisfaction (Zarea, Negarandeh, Dehghan-Nayeri & Rezaei-Adaryani, 2009). Therefore, to overcome this global issue, solutions such as successful recruitment and evidence-based retention strategies are imperative (Ferrell, James & Holland, 2011).
