The phenomena that are studied in Communication Studies focuses on the various aspects of human communication. It covers a wide range of subjects, from interpersonal face to face conversations to communication on the mass lever such a media and television broadcasting.
1b. What kind of data are collected in this minor?
There are many was that data are collected in Communication Studies, one of the main ways are by video. Another way to collect data is being using questionnaires and surveys; they generate comparisons between subjects from a statistical standpoint.
2. What are the implicit assumptions of this minor? (List and explain at least 2)
A main assumption about Communication Studies is that it’s one dimensional and only deal with communication on a mass level, that’s understandable with technology being such an integral part of modern society’s around world. Though it is very undermined and unappreciated interpersonal communication is used on a daily basis.
3. What are some of the major concepts for this minor? (List and explain at least 2)
One of the main concepts in Communication Studies is the mass media concept, disciplines such as journalist, advertisement researchers, and designers all rely on mass media. Speech communication which is mainly used to critique speeches, and conduct proper interviews are another important concepts.
4. What are some of the major theories for this minor? (List and explain at least 2)
The Cultivation Theory is a major theory that is studied in Communications, with technology and the internet expanding society are influenced by the media more than ever. Confirmation Bias which shapes how we choose and where we receive our media, a perfect example is how liberals tend to watch CNN and MSNBC and conservatives sway towards FOX news.
5. What methods are used in this minor to study a problem or issue?
A main problem solving method is input, it’s used in a variety of ways to consider individual differences relative to problem solving and decision making. Verbal and Non-Verbal methods of communication are used in a number of ways.
6. What are the limitations of this minor? (List and explain at least 2)
We are very limited culturally in Communication Studies, in many societies English isn’t the main language and men don’t dominate society such as in Arabic countries. The language barrier is another limitation, translating can only be done in person or by caption.
