Persuasive Essay: Outline Resource

If you did not take UNV 104 or if you would like to review the writing concepts introduced in UNV 104, it is suggested that you view a media piece entitled, “The Writing Process,” which is available to support the development of your writing skills. For this Module, focus on the “How Do I Organize My Brainstorm into an Outline?” section of the media piece.

Directions for viewing the “How Do I Develop a Thesis?” section of the “The Writing Process” media piece:
1) Review the media piece “The Writing Process,” located within the Multimedia folder in Canyon Connect.
a) Open the media piece “The Writing Process.”
b) Click Start.
c) Read the page called “The Purpose.” To go to the next page, click Continue, located in the lower right corner.
d) Listen to the audio at the “Brief Introduction” page. To go to the next page (Prewrite Menu), click Continue, located in the lower right corner.
e) Next, click “How Do I Organize My Brainstorm into an Outline?” for information related to the assignment.

Assignment Directions:
Outline your persuasive essay below by doing the following:
1) Use the feedback you received from your instructor to revise your thesis statement. Write your thesis as a complete sentence as you would in your essay. Record your thesis statement in the “Thesis Sentence” entry under the Introductory Paragraph heading below.
2) Create a topic sentence for each of the three paragraphs that comprise the body of your essay. Record the topic sentences in each of the “Topic Sentence” entries under the “Support for Thesis” headings. Your topic sentence should support your thesis and provide a transition between the paragraphs.
3) Record at least three details for each topic sentence. These details should provide support the topic sentence.
4) Record a concluding sentence under the “Conclusion” heading. This should be your thesis restated in different words.

Persuasive Essay Outline

Introductory Paragraph
Thesis Sentence: Prostitution should be legalized in the United States because this would help decrease the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s), decrease the violence against prostitutes and provide a safer work environment for those employed as prostitutes.

Support for Thesis 1
Topic Sentence: Prostitution should be legalized in the United States because this would help decrease the spread of sexually transmitted disease.
Detail A: If prostitution was legal I feel that it would limit the amount of sexual transmitted diseases throughout the United States of America.
Detail B: Not only can sexually transmitted disease cause through prostitution, there become a high risk of cervical cancer from contracting the STD’s.
Detail C: We have safe sex programs for many of the people who we consider not breaking the law, so why not have a safe sex program for prostitutes and I feel the only way is to legalize prostitution.

Support for Thesis 2
Topic Sentence: Legalizing prostitution would decrease the violence against prostitutes.
Detail A: Prostitutes are taking a risk every time they step out because they know they may not make it back the same way they left.
Detail B: Prostitutes are subjected to being beating, raped, or even murdered while they are out taking risk on the streets.
Detail C: Not only do they suffer from broken bones they are traumatized, suffer depression and stress. Then most of them turn to drugs abuse because of these problems.
Support for Thesis 3
Topic Sentence: The United States should provide a safe work environment for prostitutes.

Detail A: Places within the United States provides a safe work environment for prostitutes like the state of Nevada. So why don’t we have this in all states?
Detail B: If we do have safe work environment there can be education classes to promote safe sex and provide rehabilitation for them if they are on drugs.
Detail C: The most important of all to me is that they will not be on the streets.
Conclusion:
I feel that prostitution should be legalized in the United States so we can try to put a end to violent crimes being committed against women and the spread of disease in the United States of America.
