1. The external environment is important to consider in the strategic management process. Discuss how companies use the Porter’s Five Forces model to assess the organization’s external environment and why that is so important to successful strategic management.
2. Internal Evaluation
Let’s take some time to consider it at the micro level …the level that impacts the organization directly – this is the “OT” of the SWOT analysis. Every organization faces opportunities that would allow it to compete better in the market-place and threats that could cause it not to compete as well. Give an example of a company you know or read up on one that did not really take advantage of opportunities or did not work to overcome threats to their competitive position in the market-place.
3. Cost Leadership or Differentiation
Is it possible for a company or business unit to follow a cost leadership strategy and a differentiation strategy simultaneously? Why or why not? Use an example in your answer to illustrate your position.
4. Strategic Controls
You are now in charge of an organization (Profit, Non-profit, volunteer, defense – your choice). Describe the controls you want to review to determine if the organization and the individuals are moving in the correct direction. List the top three measurement controls you would want to see.
