Discuss the ‘Journey’ taken in Sherman Alexi’s ‘The Joy of reading and writing: superman and me’ and Alice Walker’s ‘Beauty: when the other dancer is the self’
The story, The Joy of reading and writing: Superman and I by Sherman Alexie mainly focus on his struggles to achieve success in life. Towards the end of the essay, Alexie explains why he had to strive so much in life. In his own words, he says, “I was trying to save my life” (Alexie 50). Apparently, this is a powerful sentiment that provides the logical basis for the journey in Sherman Alexie’s story. It all began with learning about paragraphs and attempting to link everything in the universe to them. He beat all odds in the society including pressure to abandon school as well as learning. He would then strive to succeed in his endeavors. The journey to becoming one of the most celebrated novelists or poet amid attempts to save own life for groundwork purposes, offers him even a better standard of living which would eventually usher in progress of going back to the final submission. Apparently, the ultimate work by adults and children in attempt to save their lives forms the basis of the journey.
In the story, Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self, the author’s father is struggling with the decision that would see one of his eight children attend the country fair. The mother would definitely not travel as she tries to get most of the kids ready. In particular, the speaker is concerned about the turbulent journey that she had to endure during school days. Alice Walker mainly focuses on the months of torture in school before the parents eventually decides to take her back to their old community (to the old school). At least one teacher loved her at the old school. The rough path through high school through to adulthood summarized the tribulations of Walker. She makes mature decisions in life courtesy of the institutionalized form of education that she had successfully acquired.
