how do certain Disney films represent women? or race? or class?
in this assignment you are being asked to consider how a particular form of media represents a particular group. you may choose any form of media or combination of media forms including novels, poems, films, television shows, cartoons, news media, song lyrics, artwork, etc. you may also choose any group of people – men, women, Asian-Americans, Native Americans, homosexuals, African-American men, Buddhists, Catholics, Canadians, ministers, AIDS patients, the homeless, prisoners, Military Personnel, etc. basically, you are asking the question, “how do these sources represent and inflect our conceptions of race, gender, class, sexuality, culture or other identifying concepts?” you must choose one or two primary sources, give a detailed analysis of the source focusing on what implications the source or sources present, and consider how these representations affect larger social ideas and realities. you will use secondary sources to bolster and support your interpretation.
a minimum of 3 secondary sources, 2 of which must be peer-reviewed textual sources.
for one of these primary sources or one of your own choosing, your thesis will answer questions like these and consider the importance of that answer.
a simple example: Jhumpa Lahiri’s short story “Mrs. Sen’s” portrays Indian women as outwardly dependent on men but as possessing a strong internal strength of character.
