PROPOSAL FOR A LITERATURE-BASED DISSERTATION
(Critical or Systematic Review)
DO NOT INCLUDE THIS LIST IN THE PROPOSAL
- Principal Question (approx 10-20 words max).
- Aims and objectives of study (20-30 words max).
- Background and justification for the study. Why is this area important? Provide a critical synthesis of background literature to justify your review. Support and justify your study and demonstrate originality and relevance of your study to contemporary health and social care practice (1000 words max). This may include an account of the theoretical or evidence based domain within which your study is located.
- Summary of methods – (1500 words max). You should make clear what you propose to do – this will include:
- Outline and justify your intended method of literature review: is this a critical review or systematic review. Check with your supervisor that the type of review is relevant to your subject area.
- Sources of data and information – what types of sources will you use, and how will you locate them? Search terms.
- What databases, libraries, other web-based resources will be used?
- Indicate initial inclusion / exclusion criteria for articles/papers/books. Filter method.
- How will you conduct a quality review or other critique of literature you use? What quality check list will you use? CASP is generally not acceptable for a level 7 systematic review. For other checklists see, on BlackBoard, the document Resource base for conducting systematic reviews.
- What method/s of analysis/review/synthesis will you apply to your findings e.g. qualitative or quantitative?
- Is there a theoretical framework which you expect to refer to and use (e.g. critical social theory, feminism, Marxism, Virtue ethics, psychoanalytic, organisational systems)? This is relevant particularly to critical reviews.
- How will results of study be reported and disseminated and to whom? (100 words max).
- Time line – which is realistic.
Checklist for Critical or Systematic Review proposals. This is the checklist that the DMG reviewers will use to review your project. It is recommended that you and your supervisor use this to help it pass the review process, but your supervisor does not need to sign the form off. SUPERVISORS SHOULD SEND AN EMAIL OF SUPPORT FOR THE PROJECT AT THE TIME OF SUBMISSION TO DMGproposalHWB@shu.ac.uk
