Drug dealers

There are many reasons why drug should go to jail on death penalty, but the most important ones are: drug dealers destroy people’s lives, they make a lot of money and don’t pay taxes on this money and they cause a lot of people to die and go to jail for the rest of their lives. The percentage of people who die because of drug use are very high. Joseph A. Califano Jr., describes that about 20,000 people died in the year of 2003 because of illicit drug abuse. The abuse of drugs is because people become addicted very easily, and the drug dealers continue to sell it to the customers because they make a lot of money from it. For example, in New York Magazine, Arianne Cohen described how much a drug dealer makes in one year in only profit. Cohen reports that drug dealers make an average of 813,000 a year working 15 hours a week and paying no taxes. This means that these people contaminate and cause a lot of deaths, and they are not even paying their country back in taxes. Califano Jr. points out that “marijuana and cocaine also play a deadly role in auto accidents.” Although many people think that death penalty is not a positive thing, Hugo Adam Bedau declares that from a Gallup poll in 2002, it “found that 70 per cent of Americans favor the death penalty while only 25 per cent oppose it.” (pg. 186) Death penalty has shown results in states that used to have a high crime rate. Bedau supports this by stating that “States aggressively using the death penalty have generally seen their murder rates decline while states not using the penalty have seen their rates increase.” (pg. 193) This would have the same result in drug dealers if they were shown that the consequences would be death instead of jail. Finally, with this evidence, we can clearly see that drug dealers are harmful to our society and it would only be beneficial to America to impose the death penalty on them.
