Early childhood education
Introduction
This article is about the provision of education facilities. It refers to literacy, which is essential in social interaction. It aids in effective communication between individuals and different groups of different sizes. Literacy plays a significant role in providing an interaction basis for families, communities, organizations and countries. Literacy is used for different purposes (Wolfe and Flewitt 2010). They include individual expression of expectations through words, gestures and actions. Different modes of communication are influenced by the amount of information available to composers at any given time. The different forms of communication include images, music, artworks and objects. Technology plays a significant role in developing and accessing information.
Main body
Literacy has often been viewed as a social practice in historical perspective. This is different from the view that literacy is an individual level of conceptualization. This concept assumes that literacy is a principle associated to print media. This is because of basing literacy on the amount of information grasped from the printed sources. Literacy is closely related to early year’s development of children (Wolfe and Flewitt 2010). This corresponds to the development of a child’s language, and literacy abilities. This is achieved through teaching the children the techniques used in sound and rhythms of a language.
The use of books and other printed materials provides an effective aid in building literacy levels. Encouraging children to read books and share stories they have read is a significant effort. Introducing children to new technologies is also an emphasis to diversify literacy capacity and creativity. These efforts are driven by the demand for accountability in children’s education. As a social practice, there is a significant amount of the use of ICT as a means to an end rather than getting its meaning. Information and communication have become highly prized commodities in the world today. It is necessary to focus on building literacy levels rather than developing the meaning of literacy.
Literacy practices in the 21st Century have become sophisticated. One has to have several tools including books, internet connection and computers to participate effectively. One also ought to have the necessary skills needed to use the human and material tools. There is a need to understand the diverse tools and information used in various literacy methods. The usefulness of the use of the different materials depends on its ability to understand the processes and their meanings.
The data collected for assembling this information was collected on a questionnaire basis from an individual’s homes. Other methods used in the collection of the data include a review of documentation with information on participants understanding of literacy (Wolfe and Flewitt 2010). This is done within wider institutions and cultural contexts. The research explored on children’s use of old and new technologies. There have been concerns over the over reliance of technologies in some children. This would intoxicate children’s mentality and lead to the inability to evaluate different sources of information.
Conclusion
The author has defined literacy as the ability of a child to exercise inner control in understanding the meaning of systems. This perspective indicates that children’s changing literacy practices at home are related to traditional and new technologies used in schools. Understanding the roles of technology in the process of children’s literacy enables for the provision of equal opportunities for children . It also helps boost children’s morale in their education as they are able to access information with confidence.
