Length: 2000 to 2500 words (7 to 10 pages in 12-point type)
Instructions: For Assignment 1, you are required to write an essay in which you consider, in detail, one important topic from the first half of the course.
You are to use the best available scholarly literature and primary sources on the subject you choose. In researching the paper, you are expected to go beyond the textbooks and other assigned readings from the course. You are to make use of the supplementary materials (books and articles) in the LU Library or in any other college or university library to which you have access. See the Supplementary Materials section at the end of each unit for suitable works to begin your research on the essay topics listed below.
Your essay should be within the word length specified above. Your paper must be word-processed and be double-spaced. Your paper must include notes and a bibliography following The Chicago Manual of Style.
Essay Topics: Choose one (1) of the following essay topics. When you have chosen your topic, consult the Supplementary Materials section of the appropriate unit (or units) from the course. Use pertinent primary sources (in translation) to support your arguments.
What was the Roman concept of slavery? How did their system work? Explain, examining changes over time (if any), and citing specific historical evidence.

How did the Roman army change over the period of the Republic? Why did it change? Cite specific historic evidence to support your argument.
OR
What methods did Rome use to rule the areas it conquered? Were these methods the same for Italy as for other countries? Did the Romans change their methods over time? Explain, citing specific historical evidence to support your argument.
