Ethics and God

Post on Moodle whether you think God (a) is important to ethics in some way, (b) unrelated to ethics in some way or every way, or (c) detrimental to ethics in some way. I am not asking whether God’s commands make actions be right or wrong. Both Christian and secular scholars generally do not think God makes right actions be right actions or wrong action be wrong actions, given the euthyphro dilemma. YOUR post should be no less than 550 words.

Please follow the APA paper format.

Specifics for the rubric for papers and forums grading

1. Avoid begging the question. This is where you assert a claim but offer no justification for it.

2. Avoid affirming contradictory statements, i.e., you first say one thing and then you say just the opposite.

3. Avoid using a dictionary to define words. I trust that if you understand the word you are using, you can better define it yourself.

4. Avoid quoting authors unless it is to confirm some information that you did not just make up or guess about, e.g., statistics and polls. If you choose to quote an author, make sure you follow up with explaining the author in your own words. If you are not sure what the author is really saying, then don’t quote the author because your lack of understanding the author will show.

5. Avoid saying something that is related but does not justify the point you are trying to prove. This is a red herring.

6. Define the terms you are using to avoid vagueness.

7. Avoid telling personal/anecdotal stories as sufficient proof of your position.

8. If you quote the Bible, make sure you avoid proof texting, i.e., avoid saying the Bible says X is true so X must be true. Provide justification.

9. Avoid saying you can see both sides of an issue. Take a position and defend it.

10. When you attack a position, makes sure you don’t misrepresent it in the form of a strawman.

11. Avoid emoting in your paper and forum. I want to see arguments, not emotions. So avoid saying, “that was silly what the author said” or “what the author said pissed me off.”
