Abstract

Leaders are key members of society and greatly influence the direction and success of their society. Their characters are defined by their leadership style and consequently this defines the group that they are leading. Different leaders over the years have different leadership characteristics. This includes their base of power, leadership motivation and leadership style. In this paper I am going to evaluate a particular leader with respect to this attributes. I am going to refer to the leader throughout the paper as General Cody. General Cody is a 55 year old, male who is the head of nurses in a large hospital.

Base of power

Bases of power refer to the methods that managers and leaders utilize to influence their employees. When examining bases of power, the concept of authority must also be considered. These two are interconnected attributes tied to the behavior of superiors over subordinates. General Cody base of power is expert power charismatic power and information power meaning he derives his power from having ability to administer knowledge, has good charisma and has access to information which his subordinates do not have access to. General Cody first base of power, expert information, is derived from the fact that he has more experience than most of his subordinates and is very keen on learning from doctors around him. He sometimes does not know certain concepts but shows that he knows them and this instill a sense of respect in the subordinates. This ensures that the subordinates respect him as a leader and as a professional. General Cody also has access to information that his subordinates do not have access to because he has a special relationship with the doctors the administrators in the hospital. He knows how the hospital is ran and the ins and outs of the day to day activities of the hospital. This information helps General Cody to portray an image of knowledge and he shows that he is on another level from the subordinates hence gets respect from them. General Cody is also a very charismatic individual who lights up a room and interacts well with subordinates without loosing their respect.

Leadership motivation

General Cody motivates his staff through transformational leadership. He has various ideas about his department that he believes will make them more effective. He uses his charm to make his subordinates to believe in his vision. Most of the other nurses do believe in General Cody’s vision and are working towards it because of this.
