Discussion:

NURSING: The American Nurse Association (ANA, 2012) defines nursing as the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations.

Many variables throughout history have impacted the evolution of the profession of nursing.  No longer are nurses untrained caregivers, but educated professionals striving to provide holistic care to the patient.  To appreciate our profession in the 21st century, it is important to understand where it began and how it has evolved over time.
