Explore the initiation theme in the first three stories in Dubliners: "The Sisters," "An Encounter,"
"Araby." The paper would need to deal with the following: What’s your understanding of the initiation theme? is the
narrator in each story the same person? if so how old would you make him out to be in each? Does he show any signs of
emotional or intellectual growth as we move from one to the other?
2) Identify the "moment of epiphany" in each, e.g. the final paragraph in "Araby." Choose one such moment
and describe what is revealed and to whom.
3) Compare Gabriel Conroy in "The Dead" to Mr. Duffy in "A Painful Case." What do they have in common?
How do they differ?
4) Do any of the stories in Dubliners in corporate comedy? If so how? Illustrate.
