Emma has always been pursuing love, which shows that she has the sense of revolting and the perseverance of finding her ideal life. It was Renaissance during Emma’s time. There were many female clubs in Paris, and those clubs were pursuing the equal right for woman: the right of education and occupation. This notion of feminism could be seen in Emma. However, those advanced theory were not accepted by where Emma was from. Where Emma was born, educated and lived still followed the traditional model for women, which is that they should stay at home taking care of their husbands, children and all the other trivial housework at home. Especially married women, they should give their body and moral to their husbands. This collective unconsciousness was caused by the patriarchal society.
“A man, at least is free; he can explore the whole range of the passions, go wherever he likes, overcome obstacles, savor the most exotic pleasures. But a woman is constantly thwarted. Inert and pliable, she is restricted by her physical weakness and her legal subjection. Her will, like the veil tied to her hat with a cord, quivers with every wind; there is always some desire urging her forward, always some convention holding her back.” Emma wanted a boy, she thinks that only a boy could maybe change her life and have freedom. She thinks men are free; they can travel and pursue happiness. Unlike a women like her, she lost the freedom of activity. The idea of the sex of her child is influenced by collective unconsciousness. However, from another perspective, this is the notion of equal rights has already started to grow in Emma’s head; She wants freedom. Thus, she broke the traditional models of a women seeking for adventures and excitement. She couldn’t be satisfied in her marriage because of her husband’s mediocrity. They don’t speak the same language. Emma constantly imagines one day she would meet somebody who could get her all the experience that she wanted. This delusional idea is a reflection of the dissatisfaction in her life.
When Emma was a young lady, she was actually an independent woman. She was educated and being able to choose her own husband. “She remembered the heroines of novels she had read, and the lyrical legion of those adulterous women began to sing in her memory with sisterly voices that enchanted her. It was as though she herself were becoming part of that imaginary world, as though she were making the long dream of her youth come true by placing herself in the category of those amorous women she had envied so much. “Those romantic novels she read when she was at the convent implanted the idea of patriarchy in her head. So Emma thinks that if she wanted to achieve what she wanted she had to reply on men. However, Charles disappointed her with his satisfaction towards the boring life. Then she turned her mind to her child. But in the end, it was girl. Her goal to be free and live a life that she wanted had been diminished again. Nevertheless. Emma still didn’t give up; she had two affairs to pursue her ideal life. The motive of being a mistress is to seek a better life. This idea was a forward thinking of a woman at that time. Thus, all the rebellions behaviors that Emma had coming from the instinctive reaction of women. Emma can be seen as a typical representative of pursuing women’s liberation.
