What I’d like you to consider in this module are the specific media of calligraphy, manuscript painting (or illuminated manuscripts/miniature painting) and carpets (or other textiles if you prefer). You’ve probably noticed that the later one goes in the history of the Islamic world, the more objects there are that survive down to the present day. This is especially the case with more ephemeral objects like calligraphy, painting and textiles/carpets. For this discussion, consider an example of one or two of these forms and briefly try to summarize the development of the object in the Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal periods. For example, you may choose manuscript painting and discuss what you see as the essential differences between Safavid and Mughal painting. Try to think about why these objects look the way they do. Is it possible to determine how a painter approached their subject? What seem to be the preferred subjects for miniature painting? Do you see a clear style being developed in the artistic products of these three dynasties?

You may use the same approach for calligraphy and carpets if you like. Feel free to make reference to earlier examples in any media to make your points more clearly.
