Spend a morning/afternoon/evening recording information contained in youth/kid oriented TV shows (e.g. Disney Channel; PBS; Cartoon Network, PBS Sprout, Nickelodeon). You may want to ask children/youth around you what shows they watch on TV/computer and when.
Take notes that include illustrative examples that address the following prompts:
• How is gender depicted/represented?
• What kinds of roles/activities do the characters engage in?
• How do these shows communicate to us what is “normal” in terms of gender?
• How do these shows communicate the intersectionality of gender with race, class, language, ability, sexuality?
Analyze:
Using your notes identify specific patterns and/or themes related to gender. Make connections to issues of power, privilege, and oppression with readings from weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Reflect & Connect:
Write 6 page critical reflection paper that includes analysis of your data and connections to course readings (weeks 1, 2, 3, 4). Cite readings you discuss in your analysis.
Include a section that discussesimplications for teaching and learning. How might you as a future teacher affirm/challenge these messages? How might you help children think critically about these messages?
