GERONTOLOGY Psychological Aspects of Aging

This assignment assesses intended course outcome 2:

2. differentiate between expected and atypical neurocognitive changes in aging adults

The vast majority of older adults do not suffer from diseases that cause cognitive impairment (ie, Alzheimers, stroke). But nearly all people who live past the age of 70 experience some cognitive changes, such as slower response times in problem solving or word recall. The problem is determining what cognitive changes are “normal” and what changes are a symptom of disease. This paper will help you gain a better understanding of the wide range of cognitive function in later life.

Incorporate these findings into your paper.

In your paper, address the following questions.

What is the current prevalence rate of Alzheimer’s Disease? (Note: To answer this question, locate a recent article (published within the last five years) using the UMUC library database or a reputable website that provides population data that identifies current prevalence rates of Alzheimer’s disease (e.g., the Alzheimer’s Association, the Centers for Disease Control, or the National Institute on Aging, etc.)
How can you distinguish between normal cognitive changes versus early signs of cognitive impairment (ie, Alzheimers Disease) in older people?(Note: To answer this question, locate 2-3 recent articles (published within the last five years) using the UMUC library database or a reputable website. You can also refer to your course material and your class textbook.)
Besides Alzheimers Disease, what other types of disesase can cause cognitive impairment in older adults?
Finally, a friend calls you to say she is concerned about her elderly father and is afraid he is becoming cognitively impaired. Based on what you’ve discovered from writing this paper, what advice would you give her?
Your paper should be three to four pages in length, not including title and reference pages. The paper should be double spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides. Use APA format for all citations and references.
