ENGL 015 – Fine
Writing Assignment 2 – “Reporting Information”
Our first core writing assignment focuses on exposition, or writing that is based upon the delivery of information to the reader in an unbiased and efficient way. As Bullock suggests, there are five key features to keep in mind:
• Have a tightly focused topic
• Use well-researched, accurate information
• Employ various writing strategies
• Use clear definitions
• Use visuals purposefully
Resources –
If you recall, we looked at two examples: Susan Stellin’s, “The Inevitability of Bumps” (expository prose) and the Timex alarm clock instructions. Both of these employ effective expository strategies, so reference them when you need ideas about how to proceed.
In addition to reviewing the Key Features section, the supplementary chapters, and the additional sample essays in Chapter 9, you should also make frequent use of pp. 108-117 in your text, which walks you through the process of writing in expository fashion.
• Pages 110-111: will aid you in “Choosing a Topic”
• Page 111 will help you to think carefully about rhetorical situation
• Pages 111-114 will assist you in “Generating Ideas and Text” and “Organizing your Report”
• Pages 114-117: will support your drafting and revising
Options –
There are three common uses for exposition; consider one of the following –
• An essay that explains an idea or concept (for example, “What is Existentialism?”)
• An essay that explains a process or account (for example, “A brief history of Led Zeppelin” (or) “How an
internal combustion engine works”)
• An instructional document (for example, “How to change the spark plugs in a 1966 Pontiac GTO”)
Note: no recipes or how-to change a flat tire instructions! Preparing to write –
What’s key here is that you pick a topic of interest, and that it’s something you already know a good deal about. Being knowledgeable aboutyourchosentopicis essentialtoyoursuccess, sochoosewisely. Thelessyouknow, the more research you’ll have to do to become educated enough to provide an unbiased account.
In preparation for drafting, I’d like youto do the following:
1. Brainstorm a list of potential topics.
2. Create a rhetorical analysis of your writing situation. Consider your purpose, audience, context, and genre (refertoyourclassnotes–remember therhetoricaltriangle?).
3. Create an outline before you write. Be sure to think structurally.
Note: be sure to type up a copy of steps two and three (above); I’ll be asking you for them during the first
conference session.

Also this is the draft that I wrote for this essay. Thanks!
Global Warming
As society becomes aware of the big picture, people tend to neglect the importance of nature. However, it is crucial to recognize the nature to grasp the big picture. “Global Warming” is one of the topics that really issued all around the world. The definition of global warming is “an increase in the earth’s average atmospheric temperature that causes corresponding changes in climate and that may result from the greenhouse effect.” Most people do not recognize how global warming is fatal to nature. So I would like to explain what is global warming, the reason of the global warming, and how to prevent nature from global warming.
There are many reasons for global warming. First, the natural causes of global warming. In here, there are three main causes: sunspots, Permafrost, and water vapor of global warming. Sunspot is caused by increasing of solar activity makes Earth’s solar radiation levels, which causes short-term radiation cycle. This mean the radiation cycle in the rotation increases. Permafrost, 25 percent of land in Northern Hemisphere, used to be locked carbon and methane, which prevents from global warming. However, recently, it starts to emit carbon that increases the global warming. Water vapor is the last reason that increases global warming. Almost two-thirds of increases global warming because of carbon dioxide-induced warming. Second, there are human-made causes in global warming : Burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and fertilizer use. Burning of Fossil Fuels, which most of the carbon dioxide is caused,
