Global Warming: Fact Or Fiction
Introduction
Global warming is the increase in temperature on the earth’s facade and water masses. It is one of the most challenging debates in the world today with people being at odds on its causes. A group of scientists argue that global warming is a real phenomenon caused by human activities, while others believe it is a myth that has no relation to human activities. This paper outlines both arguments in great detail and is aimed at convincing the senate that both arguments do exist. The paper further concludes by making a recommendation to the senate to make efforts and establish a stand the government will on the issue of global warming.
Background information on global warming
Environmentalists all over the world are afraid that the world will be swept away by the effects of global warming. However, skeptics refuse to be moved by such theories. The concept of global warming revolves around the fact that human activities cause the earth to get warmer and warmer. Skeptics have again come up with arguments against global warming. A week hardly passes by without reports and debates on global warming. Scientists invest good deal of their time researching global warming effects and often come up with differing results. The earth has noticed environmental changes and humans are at crossroads on what are the causes of these changes. The solution to global warming is unsure and uncertain because of the differing opinions on the causes.
Is global warming fiction?
Skeptics dispute the environmentalists’ opinion that human activities cause global warming. They insist that the opinions are based on unreliable climatic models that are generated by computer programs and socialist biases. It is highly believed that global warming is caused by natural causes which are necessary to maintain balance of the earth’s climate. They trap sunlight and help in warming the earth making it conducive for human existence. If the natural factors would have not caused global warming, the earth would be very cold making it unsuitable for humans to live.
According to a recently published book, The Coming Global Superstom (Bell & Strieber, 2000), the effects of global warming such as heat, cold, ice and occurrence of hurricane are natural and should not worry the human race (Leroux, 2005, p 76). The catastrophes are only but fictitious with no evidence to support them. All the arguments, predictions, and supposed consequences are based upon one untrue hypothesis which has not yet been proved. The hypothesis is that human activities lead to greenhouse effects that raise temperatures which will always continue to increase temperatures and consequently modify the elements of the climate (Ercegova, 2008, p 24). The hypothesis lacks tangible and indisputable proof other than pictures of air pollution that are a local prove. On the global scale, scientists can only prove the effects of global warming by citing distant cases on the basis of co-variations that have no substantial link (Leroux, 2005, p 78).
Is global warming a fact?
Global warming has led to environmental insecurity with increased natural disasters. We are no longer in the times of procrastination (Sir Winston Churchill, 1936). The increasing environmental insecurity has shifted the discourses of development. The Indian Ocean experienced a tsunami on December 26, 2004. This questioned the readiness of communities living in Thailand to cope with disasters. Since the United States started keeping records, the year 2005 was the warmest. In July 2006, more than 2,300 heat records were broken due to an increase in carbon dioxide levels. Carbon dioxide accumulates in the atmosphere in a uniform manner. High levels of accumulation form a thicker blanket that traps heat and reduces levels of escape. High levels of heat have led to the melting of the arctic. Rise in temperature levels cause droughts, heat waves and cold waves (Philander, 2008, p 112). The increasing numbers of hurricanes is the biggest evidence of the effects of global warming on climate change.
Global warming has triggered extinctions of animals from the earth surface. The extinct animals include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. Extinction is as a result of increase in temperature levels which lead to loss of habitat and climate change. The polar bear faces extinction due to the melting of ice and loss of habitat forcing them to migrate to the North Pole. Global warming has led to hibernation, breeding and migration of animals. Studies indicate that hibernation has affected egg laying patterns which now happen five days earlier than usual. This pattern affects the newborn and lead to most animals bearing new born with defects.
Humans are currently being indirectly affected by the effects of global warming. Humans are dependent on nature and have been exploiting it for a long period of time, so the alteration of nature has a backward effect on humans. Fresh water supplies are disrupted by increase in the levels of sea levels caused by melting of glaciers. Islands and tiny coastal towns are on the verge of submerging due to the rise in sea levels (David, 2006, p 212). Extinction of carnivorous animals such as the tiger has led to an increase in herbivores, which feed on the vegetation cover reducing rainfall levels.
Conclusion and recommendation
This paper notes that both arguments have strong opinions on the issue of global warming. The world is separated into two extreme groups with one considering it as a myth and the other as a fact. There have been a lot of environmental hazards as characterized by the increase in number of floods and drought encroachment in parts of the country. The government should trace the root of the problem by sponsoring researches and coming up with an informed position on the origin of global warming.
