Growth of Counter-Terrorism and Homeland Security since 9/11
Research Question(s):
• What is the difference in President Bush and President Obama’s view on terrorism and homeland security?
• What makes up the Department of Homeland Security?
• What are different acts, laws, and/or departments to help in anti-terrorism and homeland security?
Alternative Hypotheses: The Obama war on terror plan has worked better than the Bush plan on terror.
Null Hypotheses: Both Presidents plan on terror have worked effectively.
Independent Variables: Which president’s plan has shown more success toward ant-terrorism? The independent variable would be the plan because I would tell about both of the President’s plans.
Dependent Variables: Showing the affect (terrorist attacks) would be the dependent variable. For the fact of not having control of the different plan’s outcomes.
EXAMPLE 2
Topic: Emergency preparedness at institutes of higher education (IHEs).
Research Question(s):
Does involving students in the preparation of hazard vulnerability analyses (HVAs) at IHEs improve the implementation of mitigation tools?
Alternative Hypotheses:
Involving students in the preparation of hazard vulnerability analyses at IHEs improves the likelihood that the administration will implement mitigation tools.
Null Hypotheses:
Involving students in the preparation of hazard vulnerability analyses at IHEs has no bearing on the likelihood that the administration will implement mitigation tools.
Independent Variables:
Demographics and other qualifications of the students.
Level of involvement in the HVA.
Dependent Variables:
Likelihood that mitigation tools will be implemented.
Moderating Variables:
Value the campus holds in the participating students’ statements.
Contact with campus organizations that the students make after participation in the HVA.
Mediating Variable:
Mitigation tools implemented or considered for disasters occurring near the time of the HVA.
