Please, refer to the book Politics of Latin America: The Power Game by Harry E. Vanden and Gary Prevost “Fifth Edition“.
Read chapter 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 of the book.
Write an Essay on each of the following questions (About 1 page for each question):
(Use examples from the book and discussions to highlight your points. Use proper names and dates where appropriate).
Please consider the following while writing:
1- Please answer the questions without retyping the question; it is enough referring to the questions with their appropriate numbers in order to save more space for the answers. (I want NO written questions in the answers file please).
2- Each easy must include at least two examples to support and backup your answer.
3- Avoid using “they” or “those” and refer to people by proper names and titles.
4- Be clear and answer all parts of the question.
5- Use simple clear sentences.
Questions
1- Define and discuss dependency theory. Who were the leading dependency theorists? Why doesn’t dependency theory fit well with neo-liberal economic and import substitution theories? (He said be sure to give examples: A name or two)
2- What is Neolibralism and why is it such a problem for Latin American countries? Explain their positive and negative effects.
3- Write an essay in which you compare democracy and authoritarianism. First define both and second provide country examples of how they are practiced?
4- Discuss struggles for change in Nicaragua and Ecuador. Did they go right, center-right, center-left, or left politically? Discuss any reasons why they took those positions. (Please provide dates and the professor said read the Ecuador section from Ch:10 very carefully)
5- Latin American political culture is more than an admixture of democratic and authoritarian values. Name and discuss some characteristics and value clusters that illustrate that statement. (Note: look for the answer in the political culture section).
6- Why do Latin American governments have to move carefully in dealing with unions? Why is this? What examples from contemporary news reports exemplify the potential for and/or existence of tension between them?
