1. Using the ‘addressing framework’ (see Chapter 2 of the textbook) analyse one of the most important cultural influences in your life (Approx 150 words).
2. How does self-awareness contribute to being an effective interviewer? Explain your answer using relevant theory (Approx 200 words).
3. A client said to you halfway through the first interview, ‘you wouldn’t understand my life. No-one does’. Write two responses that you think would be effective and explain your answer using relevant theory (Approx 300 words).
Please include a brief introduction and conclusion. The assignment must be written in paragraph form (i.e. not in dot points or question and answer form).
Your assignment must be supported by at least four references and adhere to Harvard referencing conventions. Both journal articles and textbooks are suitable to use.

Course Aim
To enable students to develop and demonstrate effective human service interviewing skills and their appropriate application.
Course Objectives
On completion of this course, students should be able to:
CO1. Critically examine the main forms of interviewing in social work and the human services, their functions, forms and processes
CO2. Apply knowledge of the stages of an interview and the skills and techniques utilised in each including building rapport, assessment, problem identification, goal setting, implementation and evaluation.
CO3. Demonstrate the ability to report on interview outcomes
CO4. Demonstrate competence in structuring, focusing and directing an interview with clients from diverse backgrounds
CO5. Demonstrate the ability to be reflexive and accurately critique own skills and effectiveness in the conduct of an interview
Course Content
Students wil develop knowledge of social work approaches and reflexive practice including Anti oppressive, empowerment, strengths based practice and solution focussed approaches, clinical decision-making and identifying, defining and evaluating outcome goals.
Students will use skill based learning to develop their skills in interviewing and the processes associated with human service interviews including developing the relationship, collaborative assessment, conceptualising and assessing client’s problems, concerns and contexts and working with resistance in diverse contexts and with a range of clients.
