This assignment requires you to carefully read and then summarize an article from our textbook (assigned in-class). Summary writing avoids casual language for the most part and instead focuses on what the article is presenting in terms of information, studies, education, theories, etc. So instead of saying, “I think this article talks about some really important stuff,” you might try, “This article focuses on _____, ______, and _______. The author discusses her study of _______ and believes that…” Summaries point out the main point and important sub-points of the article. They traditionally don’t use many, or any, direct quotes. This assignment should be in MLA documentation style, expository mode, and appropriate academic form (well-written, edited, following standard grammatical concepts, etc.). The summary should be a minimum of one full page in standard paragraphing format.
