–Background–
In 1958, historian Russel Ward was one of a new wave of historians to go back to the convict era to develop a picture of a distinctly Australian character. Ward’s work was a fresh look at bush nationalism in the context of convicts, bushrangers, and of course the Anzac legend. The book, The Australian Legend, remains at the centre of historical debate about Australian nationalism and national character.
