NOTES:
The news follows the opening of JLR’s plant in China last week, which is being run in partnership with domestic group Chery Automobile.
The Chinese plant is part of a 10.9bn yuan (£1.1bn) investment and is located in the eastern province of Jiangsu, north of Shanghai. It has a planned production of 130,000 cars in its first year.
The West Midlands-based luxury car group is targeting foreign expansion as it looks to double sales by 2020. Last year JLR sold 434,000 vehicles, a 15.7pc increase on the previous 12 months.
Professor David Bailey, an auto industry expert at Aston Business School, said: “JLR has to look to get into foreign production. It is still very small when compared with competitors like BMW and if it wants to get close to 1m sales a year it needs to grow in foreign markets.”
Case Study Company: Jaguar Land Rover (JLR)
Speaking at the Sao Paulo Auto Show, Phil Popham, JLR group marketing director, said: “Brazil and the surrounding regions are very important to Jaguar Land Rover.
“With customers in Brazil showing an increasing appetite for highly capable premium products, we are proud to confirm that our new Discovery Sport will be manufactured at our new Brazilian facility.”
