in a contemporary, global society like Hong Kong, we face ‘differences’ every day, however, we might not be able to recognize them as we have already accepted the dominant culture in a taken-for-granted way. in this we will focus on the ‘rediscovery’ of diverse cultures in everyday life. it is not a just a study of ‘differences’ and diversity in a neutral sense. it is alsothe study of inequality, oppression, bigotry, discrimination, and exploitation.
the course will be equipped with various perspectives such as sociology and cultural studies as analytical tools to identify, and examine the critical issues of multiculturalism in Hong Kong. Topics include different ethnic cultures, local cultures, sub-cultures etc.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
completing the subject will be able to
– define key terms relating to multiculturalism and diversity
– identify critical issues of multiculturalism in the context of Hong Kong
– identify and critically assess the mainstream discourses
-describe and explain the key elements of diverse identity by ethnicity, gender, social class, sexual orientation etc.
