Critiquing a Peer-Reviewed Research Article
You are to choose a topic or area of psychology that interests you and then find an empirical research article in this area from one of the many psychological journals. This article should be the same one that you used to complete Lab Report #9. If for any reason you did not complete Lab Report #9, you will need to have your article approved by me prior to completing your article critique.
You are to use the following questions as a format for writing your article critique. The critique should be written in essay format and should be written in your own words. Do not directly quote from the article.
A. Introduction: 1 points
1. Describe the topic of the research article and related research described by the authors.
2. State the study’s hypothesis or hypotheses. If there are no hypotheses, what is the study’s intention?
B. Method: 2.5 points
1. Who were the participants of the study (number, gender, age, background)?
2. What is the setting of the study?
3. What type of research is the study: descriptive, correlational, or experimental?
4. How was the study done? How was the data collected? Describe the variables of the study and how they were defined (operational definitions).
5. Decide whether or not there were any biases in the selection of the participants or in running the experiment.
C. Results and Discussion: 5 points
1. Explain how the results support or do not support the hypotheses.
2. What are the major conclusions drawn by the authors? Do the conclusions follow logically from the results?
3. Do the authors suggest any practical implications of the study? If so, what?
4. Do you think this study was well executed? What are the limitations of the study? How might the study have been done differently?
5. To what populations or setting would you be willing to extend or generalize the conclusions?
6. Do the authors make any generalizations you are unwilling to accept? If so, what are they?
7. What future research is suggested by the study?
D. References (Include a reference page using APA format.) 0.5 point
