It is a challenge for nurse practitioner to address the concerns of elderly clients who are experiencing a serious or life-threatening illness. Tthis population has some age-related characteristics that leave them susceptible to various geriatric syndromes and diseases that make them vulnerable to serious life-threatening conditions. As a result, the nurse practitioner may see these effects play out on both the ICU utilization rates and outcomes. NPs will be expected to recognize the importance of performing ongoing, comprehensive physical, functional, and psychosocial assessments tailored to the older ICU patient. They must also be able to identify and implement evidence-based interventions designed to improve the care of this extremely vulnerable population.
