To Consider:
The writers style: is it simple? Difficult? overly descriptive? What do you think guides the author decision to write in this way.
The role Marcia plays in the novel..ie. What kind of person is she, compared to Bucky, and what purpose does she serve on the novel?
When considering the novels theme. think of the mythological meaning such as:
Dostoyevsky (Rebellion)
In brothers Karamazov
War of Jewish oppression
Think about Jewish persecution and how it referred to in the book. How does it contribute to the broader theme in the book: Bucky, his javelin, and his young admires How does it reinforce the novel theme?
Always remember the distinction between author (Roth) and main character (Bucky) They are not the same; one is the creation of the other.
