New stem cell found in the brain
Scientists for the University of Lund in Sweden (Sherwood, 12) published the article on stem cell. The article’s title was, ‘New stem cell found in brain: finding could be a cure for developing methods to heal and repair brain injury and disease’ (Sherwood, 12). Scientists have for a long period embarked on endless research aimed at coming up with new ways to improve the performance of the human body (Sherwood, 12). The study of stem cells specifically has created a lot of controversies in medical and religion fields. Research has been intensified by technology as it has given hope for possible cures many diseases. Recent research carried out by Lund University in Sweden yielded discovery of a new stem cell in the human brain (Sherwood, 12). It has been said that the cells are able to continually produce new cells. Stem cells are immature cells that can grow to become any type of cell in the body (Sherwood, 12). However, the cell could be either adult or embryonic. Adult stem cells are only found in human bodies after birth and are used to perform bone marrow transplants such as cancer. Embryonic stem cells on the other hand, develop then instance an eggs is fertilized in the womb and begins to divide in growth (Sherwood, 12).
The newly discovered stem cells are located just very close to blood vessels and their functions are yet to be established. However, a similar type of cells is used to reproduction and replacement of body muscles, repairing worn out bones as well as cartilage (Sherwood, 12). The cells are said to have a lot of potential and could help a lot in body functions such as healing wounds (Sherwood, 12). Researchers at the university are doing their best to discover ways in which the stem cells could be utilized to cure brain injuries. The article released from Lund University also says that the new cells have competent ability to manufacture another form of cells called neuronal cells (Sherwood, 12). The main objective of doctors and researchers was to develop mechanisms that would bring in new forms of treatment for brain complications. New drugs could be developed and effect of the drugs on the brain calculated to ensure healthy tissues are maintained (Sherwood, 12).
The researchers also hoped that by embarking on the project would also facilitate gene mutations and traits. The research also sorts to analyze views and opinions in all sectors of the society (Sherwood, 12). For instance, the legal field strives to ensure that any research carried out is done legally observing laws. The religious field on the other hand, ensures that ethical and moral behaviors are preserved. The government comes in handy whenever funds are required.
We however should be cautious to watch out for undesired effects that could arise when stem cells are transplanted in patients (Sherwood, 12). In some cases the cells could be rejected if a patient’s DNA cloning is not watched carefully to match that of the donor. Doctors should also make sure that cells implanted in recipients do not pose future threats by mutating. The government should be fully dedicated to supporting researches as they facilitate the future of a country. When people are healthy, the economy grows and labor force as a resource is adequate (Sherwood, 12).
