1. Poolet’s (2006) article discusses the usefulness of lookup tables in a relational database. What is a lookup table? Discuss at least two ways that lookup tables are useful. Support your answers with real or hypothetical examples from your own workplace.
Lookup table
Lookup table is an interesting excel data structure, involves an array of data that is applied in storing computations, where the time to look them up in the array is much lesser than computing them. It is used when an input data is compared to a list of data in an array. It is more essentially used in databases that have huge amounts of data as well smaller databases. Its adds value to the data being accessed.
Importance of Lookup table
The main importance of the lookup table is its speed. The amount of time that is applied in acquiring data from a list is shorter than computing the data using an algorithm, and they are quite relevant in the maintenance of integrity of data, according to the quality of products produced in Chicago Rivet & Machine Co., when an electronic inspection is done of the records for the Control Plan Production Lot it is recorded and an audit of the sample size as well as frequency is done at a relatively faster and reliable manner (Rivet, 2008). SQL
SQL is a structured query language that manages data in a relational database. It is quite relevant in companies that use huge amount of data and needs to only access certain sections of the database. Lookup makes this faster at the same time maintaining its integrity, flexibility and scalability. There are several methods are used to manage data, one can; insert, query, update and delete. Data in the Chicago Rivet & Machine Company is recorded in a much more efficient manner. When one desires to conduct an audit of the company, SQL can access the data through the use of appropriate queries. Any subsequent addition to the company has to be reciprocated in the database through an update using the SQL. Removal of any data is similarly easily done using the delete clause.
Summary
As seen above, lookup tables are quite relevant in the acquisition of several data from a database. The Lookup tables are quite relevant in an organization to assist them input, manage as well, as well as retrieve data from a relational database. The integrity, flexibility and preference are all taken care of presenting a desirable structure (Poolet, 2006). The Chicago Rivet & Machine Company is a good example of its efficient applicability. It elevates its business transactions with the client considering its speedy data retrieval at the same time maintaining data integrity. Data that is placed into the database is clean, high performing and scalable. The lookup table has gone ahead to advance it to a single lookup table that contains valid values for the domains available. An indicator is used to guide a person on the place to use as well as at what time. This has fairly brought up its dependence by most companies. Transactions are hence adding value to a company through customer loyalty.
