Both behavioural and neural evidence suggest that language switching involves inhibitory control mechanisms. Namely, a bilingual needs to operate such mechanisms in order to produce the target language effectively and efficiently. The inhibitory control model (including “switch cost” effects in a picture naming paradigm). That is, a cognitive cost occurs in language switching. A similar cost is also suggested to occur in natural code-switching. It is suggested that the control mechanisms can be adaptive in code-switching. Please discuss the relevant literature and provide your own view on this issue: namely, how do the control processes work in natural code-switching? Please also discuss the theoretical implications in L2 learning and acquisition.
