Quality Tools

Generate three diagrams from the given data and information:

Pareto Diagram

Use the following data to generate a Pareto Diagram for the total cost of quality problems by department. You can do this by hand and put it into a diagram in word, or you can use Excel. If you use Excel, follow the example in the Example Spreadsheet.

Quality Costs for 5 Weeks by Manufacturing Dept.

1 2 3 4 5

Molding $ 450 $ 275 $ 400 $ 390 $ 430

Blanking $ 200 $ 360 $ 280 $ 320 $ 210

Plating $ 225 $ 250 $ 325 $ 300 $ 230

Grinding $ 175 $ 325 $ 420 $ 380 $ 180

Finishing $ 500 $ 340 $ 440 $ 520 $ 450

Milling $ 520 $ 320 $ 635 $ 460 $ 530

Drilling $ 355 $ 475 $ 300 $ 275 $ 340

Scatter Diagram

Use the following data to generate a Scatter Diagram to show the possible relationship between Power Setting and Diameter in a drilling operation. You can do this by hand and put it into a diagram in word, or you can use Excel. If you use Excel, follow the example in the Example Spreadsheet.

Obsvn. Power Setting Diameter Obsvn. Power Setting Diameter

1 28 2 16 30 2.18

2 30 2.1 17 25 1.97

3 22 1.9 18 21 1.88

4 25 1.95 19 23 1.89

Cause and Effect Diagram

For this diagram, you need to find your own quality problem. This can be either a problem at work or one in your personal life. For example, you might be dissatisfied with how your lawn mower is cutting your grass. You can do a C-E diagram to brainstorm the possible causes of the effect “poor grass cutting”. (Maybe it’s not your lawn mower!!) You can pretty easily create this diagram using Word and lines and text boxes. You can download this template in Word to help you get started.

Assignment Expectations

Create the three diagrams as indicated above. Turn in your three diagrams and write a one to two page paper discussing the diagrams and what you would do with the information that you generated. Explain what each diagram tells you and what might be your next steps.
