Read “Navigating Genres” by Kerry Dirk (on writingspaces.org). This is a very long article, so give yourself time to respond to it. We’ll talk more about Dirk’s essay in class, but this will help us begin to dig into this complicated idea of “genre” and think about how this concept is useful to us as writers.
1. Consider the following: According to Dirk, how has our understanding of “genre” changed since its original use as a way to classify/categorize (pg. 252)? What does she say the new definition should take into account and why? How is this concept of genre useful to you as a writer?
