Reading strategies
The reading strategy to be discussed in this article is a group reading strategy. Before starting the reading session, it is always important to gather enough materials, equipments and tools. These will include books providing information on the topic of Automobile/Diesel Technology. Charts with elaborative diagrams should also be sought. Models of the actual engines should also be gathered. Writing materials are also necessary for noting down important points.
Groups made should comprise of few members, preferably a limit of five. This is necessary in ensuring that all members are actively occupied in group activities. The members of the group involved should observe punctuality and gather at the time that they had planned. This guarantees that no member of the group misses out, meaning that there is involvement and contribution from each member. The members of the group should appoint a head and a record-keeper. This will be necessary in meeting objectives set by the group members.
Once the members meet, they should begin by setting a target for the session in which they will be having their discussion. The members should use all the information obtained to discuss actively. Every member should get a chance to air their views. Constructive arguments are necessary in making the points vividly understood. Explanations and demonstrations from the diagrams and specimen models should be done in turns by all members. This gives a chance to all members to understand every concept as repetitive explanations aid in making points clear. The concepts will also be clarified in different mannerisms when done by different people. The manner in which demonstration is made should be done in a way that the actual meaning is brought out clearly. This means that interrelationships of various parts of an automobile are clearly understood.
As each group member makes his/her presentation, audibility should be put into consideration. This is necessary in ensuring that no point is missed out. Reading out loud also adds to the skill of the students involved and adds the desire of the audience in the group to learn more. Important points learned should also be noted down to provide basis for future reference. This should be done both on the group level, through the record-keeper, and at personal level. Writing down points also helps in better understanding of concepts. Everything learnt should be well understood by all members. This is ensured by formulating questions on the area of study, to be answered at the end of the discussion session by the group members. These questions should be issued before the group discussion by the tutor involved. Any concepts that are not understood should have explanation sought within the group, or if necessary, out of the group by the teacher.
At the end of the discussion session, the members should ensure that the targets set have been achieved. If this is not achieved, the members should plan for another meeting during their own time. Achieving goals is very necessary in the topic of Automobile/Diesel Technology, due to the fact that the topic of study is broad and all the subtopics should be covered within a specified period of time.
Evaluation of the concepts learnt should be made at group level and later on at individual level. By following the reading skill discussed and combining this with other reading skills, the students are assured that the topic of Automobile/Diesel Technology is clearly underst
