Reading strategy
A good lesson plan encourages students to be constantly involved in learning practices. It provides for ample coverage of the content to be studied. A lesson map should provide sufficient assistance for learners who do not understand from the initial procedure. A section that permits for monitoring of the students’ progress should be incorporated within the lesson plan. This way, no student will be left out and a topic would be well understood by all learners. In the topic of Automobiles/Diesel Technology, understanding every bit of all concepts should be enhanced for all students.
Setting of objectives for a lesson should be done by both the teacher and the student. This may include setting the target number of functions of each part of an automobile to be well recognized by the end of the lesson. This will increase the desire of the students to learn more in order to achieve their targets. A lesson should start with a rehearsal. This eases the students of tiredness which would distract them from paying attention in class. The warm up could involve asking questions from a previously learnt section. It is important in making the students feel at-ease and ready to start learning.
Following this should be a presentation, which will take the following modes: A non-disrupted reading session, using one of the major reading strategies. The teacher should then seek to find out the students’ familiarity to a random point. After getting the information needed, the teacher should then make his/her own presentation. This will not only be based on the specific question asked, but elaborative explanation of an entire sub-topic. The students at this point will be supposed to be attentive and their role will be listening. After listening the comprehension of the task at hand by the students follows.
Practice should then be made on the topic learnt. This is done by comprehending on the new terms and concepts learnt and work in group discussions. This is also the part of the lesson where mistakes are rectified and students get the chance to understand any bit that was not understood. At the end of the lesson, the teacher should seek response from the students. This may be done in reference to a diagram, where for instance the integration of various parts of a machine should be given. This adds on to the understanding capacity of the students. Assigning students tasks after the lesson ensures that all students get a chance to contribute in the lesson. This also increases the students’ concentration during a lesson.
If the skills are efficiently employed they help attaining the targets set before starting a lesson. This is due to the fact that the skills improve the understanding ability of the students. Pre/during and post reading strategies support the students in developing thinking skills. This is because they boost the imagination of the learners. Taking into consideration a reading strategy like re-reading a paragraph to get the concept, the learner gets the chance to understand from the words used. He thinks of the concept in different perspectives applies his imagination and identifies the main idea behind the explanation. This develops the understanding capacity as well. Engaging in a discussion as a post-reading strategy improves the imaginative capability of learners as they think out a concept learnt during the lesson together.
