Reflection Essay on Areas For Development

Outlined below are 2 areas of development I need to focus on as a coach. Below these areas are details re what the assignment entails i.e. the actual question to be answered – please read carefully.

Areas for Development

1. Developing a better style of questioning:

I felt I needed to work on asking the right questions and asking them with more clarity and also on guiding the conversation away from irrelevant issue (Starr, 2008). Use of clearer, more direct questions, and becoming better at guiding the conversation to avoid discussing irrelevant issues, and talking too much which could lead to pushing out time frames and affecting the flow of coaching style. Developing more efficient communications interaction i.e. clearer better structured questioning and I also felt I need to be more challenging in my line of questioning. Perhaps also utilizing Solution Focused reframing and summarising (Grant, 2013) and active listening, an ICF core competency

2. Specificity around goals

Getting more specific i.e. using SMART Goals model(Grant & Greene, 2004). more effectively i.e. to identify particular skills the coachee may need to develop in order to be more effective in execution of her plans, perhaps use of role playing also.

Commitment to behaviour change can be successful when goals are simple, specific or explicit as they seem to have a higher commitment (Locke, 1996),
